Na de aanleg via 's-Gravelandse Vaart verbinding met de rivier de Vecht en via 's-Gravelandse Vaart en Karnemelksloot (over Naarden) verbinding met Zuiderzee. Aanleg geschiedde in etappes en duurde in totaal 200 jaar! Voltooid in 1843.
